The coastal New South Wales town of Byron Bay may be renowned for its pristine beaches and laid-back lifestyle – but after all that relaxing you need something to get the heart racing! Take a look at our top five adventure activities in Byron Bay.

Skydiving

If seeing Byron Bay from the ground isn’t enough for you – then why not see it from 14,000ft? Skydiving isn’t for the faint hearted – but it sure is a lot of fun. After the initial skepticism about jumping out of plane you’ll soon be enjoying the thrill of freefalling over one of the most beautiful regions in the world. You can skydive with an instructor, a friend or for the brave you can do it alone.

There are several skydiving companies in Byron Bay to choose from including Skydive Byron Bay and Go Skydive.

Paragliding/Hang gliding

Similarly to skydiving, paragliding and hang gliding give you the opportunity to see Byron Bay from a whole new perspective – while souring like a bird. Paragliding and hang gliding are very similar, the only main difference being the shape of the wings. Hang gliders can also reach faster speeds than paragliders.

There are a range of cheap flights departing from Byron Bay that can take you either paragliding or hang gliding and all have qualified instructors to show you the ropes. Popular options include Seabreeze Hang Gliding, Flight Zone and Pro-Flyte.

Surf Lessons

No trip to Byron Bay is complete without hitting the famous waves! If you’ve never stepped onto a board before, surf lessons are a great way for you to get out into the ocean and ride your first wave. Kowabunga dude!

Surf lessons are somewhat of a Byron Bay specialty so you won’t struggle to find an instructor willing to take you out. Look for brochures at your Byron Bay accommodation or ask someone at reception for advice on surf lessons in the area.

Byron Bay Surf School, Kool Katz Surf School and Style Surfing are all popular surf schools in Byron Bay.

Sea Kayaking

Surfing can be hard to master – so if you’re short on time but still want to hit the waves, then sea kayaking is an action-packed alternative.

Get up close to whales, dolphins and turtles while you take in views of the stunning Cape Byron. You can either hire a kayak for yourself and your friends and go exploring alone, or take a sea kayaking tour.

Look for brochures in your Byron Bay accommodation or try Go Sea Kayak and Cape Byron Kayaks.

Mountain Biking

Perhaps you prefer to keep your feet on terra firma but you still want adventure. Hire a mountain bike and go exploring some of the rainforests, coastal paths and hinterland that make up the Byron Bay region.

Mountain bikes are cheap to hire and there are several places around the town to find them. If you want a bit of guidance then mountain bike tours are a great idea. Let a local take you along some of the most beautiful and scenic areas that Byron Bay has to offer. There are a range of tours to choose from including half day, full day, coastal or rainforest tours.
